Step 1

  • Call the fraud department at the companies you know fraud occurred.
  • Ask them to close or freeze the accounts.
  • Change logins, passwords, and PINs for your accounts.

Step 2

  • Place a fraud alert by calling one of the three credit bureaus. That bureau must inform the other two bureaus.

  • Equifax - 1 (888) 766-0008

Step 3

Report identity theft to the FTC at 1 (877) 438-4338.

Step 4

Once you receive an identity theft report from the credit bureau, contact each business where an account was opened and explain the situation and have them close the account.

Step 5

Report fraudulent charges on any of your accounts.

Step 6

Correct your credit report by contacting each bureau and following their procedures to correct any erroneous entries on your credit history.
